My name is Yip Kei Tang (Kh...Dear Mr. Mathias Woo,

My name is Yip Kei Tang (Kharlie), I am currently a student on the MA Architectural Design course at the Leicester School of Architecture (DMU). I was born and raised in Hong Kong and I’ve always had this love/hate relationship with the city. This is why I’ve decided to set my research topic for my MA on Hong Kong.

I’ve discovered that the culture of Hong Kong is very similar to the modernist movement, where it is trying to disregard its past and constantly looking for something fresh, something new. This can be seen from Hong Kong’s media, architecture to its lifestyle and the gossips of the people. Commodity is everything, trend over heritage. Changes in Hong Kong happen in decades rather than centuries. I believe this is a shame but yet this is Hong Kong’s culture, culture comes from tradition and in a way this is its history. I don’t think the culture should change, yet I believe there are ways to create changes while working along with its culture. I trying to create a framework where I am creating something new to maintain something old, the purpose am not to create something completely fresh, but it is to create something that can keep the essence of something old, in a way maintaining history. That essence may not necessarily be something physical, it can be something that’s invisible, for example communities or memories.

I am approaching you because your work were recommended to me by my peers and having read and studied some of your work I believe you may be able to assist me in my research. I know it is very bold of me to approach you in this format but I really believe in what I am doing and I truly think with your help, we can create something for Hong Kong. I will be in Hong Kong to visit my family and undertake research for my project between Feb 14th to Mar 5th 2010 and I was wondering if you would be able to spare sometime for maybe a short discussion or an interview. My email address is yipkeitang@hotmail.co.uk and I look forward to hearing from you.

Many thanks for your time and best regards,

Kharlie

03-01-10Kh@rliehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05141219519746477181noreply@blogger.com
